Positive Affirmations have become an extremely popular tool in the quest for a happier, more positive life. But what are they? And do they actually work?
Positive Affirmations are phrases we can repeat to ourselves as an antidote against negative thoughts. As easy as it is to talk to ourselves in negative terms, and tell ourselves that we can’t do something or that we are unworthy, so too we can be encouraging, supportive and comforting.
A number of studies has shown that maintaining a positive view of one’s self, aided by internal positive self-talk, is fundamental to support a positive sense of self. Practicing positive self-talk also help to not respond defensively to negative stimuli, stress or anxiety. And my favourite part of all – it can have a truly calming, almost meditative effect.
Practicing positive affirmations equips you with the tools to keep calm, happy and resourceful no matter what life throws at you. Not all affirmations will feel right to you immediately, but that’s OK. Keep practicing them till they do.
