What is NLP Coaching?

For those who are not familiar with it already, NLP coaching is a form of personal development that focuses on the connection between language, behavior, and thought patterns. It is based on the belief that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected and can be changed by altering the way we use language to communicate with ourselves and others.

I am also personally a firm believer that changing what you do changes who you are, and that it is faster and more effective way to address any issue in your life, BEFORE you go down the rabbit hole of ‘how did I form this belief’ or ‘what in my past has prompted me to respond this way’

How NLP Coaching Works for Stress Relief

NLP coaching can help individuals manage stress by identifying and changing their negative thought patterns. It can also help individuals develop coping mechanisms for stressful situations by teaching them how to use positive affirmations, visualization techniques, and mindfulness practices.

Techniques Used in NLP Coaching

Here are some common techniques I use when coaching clients who are looking to lead a calmer life, and why they work so well against stress.

Anchoring

Anchoring is a technique that involves creating a physical or emotional connection between a specific stimulus (like a smell or sound) and a particular emotional state (like calmness or happiness). This can be helpful in managing stress because it allows individuals to access positive emotional states whenever they need to.

Reframing

Reframing is a technique that involves changing the way we think about a situation by putting it in a different context. This can help individuals see their problems in a new light and find more positive solutions. Reframing is probably one of my most used, most beloved tool – but I also know it can be overused to avoid dealing with things, so it’s important to me that you learn when to reframe and when to actually deal with what’s in front of you head on.

A great example is when dealing with illegal, immoral or dangerous situations: you can’t reframe a partner being violent or a boss being abusive just for the sake of your peace of mind. That’s not how reframing works, and it never will.

Timeline Therapy

Timeline therapy is a technique that involves revisiting past events to reframe them in a more positive light. This can help individuals let go of negative emotions and move forward with a more positive outlook. I love timeline therapy because it helps my clients relive past experiences with a different lens, and we often find new undertones and meaning to actions they had given a certain meaning to.

So why NLP Coaching, and why do it with me? NLP coaching can help individuals regulate their emotions more effectively by teaching them how to identify and change their negative thought patterns.

It is also an amazing tool to deploy in a crisis: it goes without saying that NLP teaches you to live a more resourceful, calmer life whilst you are in ‘cold states’ – ie when not triggered by anger/shame/pain. But it can also help you better manage ‘hot states’, ie moments when we are overcome by grief, hunger, pain, or any other visceral state.

When I coach my clients, I teach them techniques to toe the line between being open and receptive, and resistant in the face of adversity. To maintain a positive, kind outlook on life, and be selectively rejective of what doesn’t serve them.

Bettering communication skills is probably what NLP is most known for, encompassing conversations with others and how we speak to ourselves. NLP coaching can help individuals improve their communication skills by teaching them how to use language more effectively to convey their thoughts and feelings, mirroring their interlocutor’s language to be more effective, and using resourceful, constructive terminology.

Stress and anxiety don’t have to mean the end of you, and you CAN learn to manage them.
